Ed O'Brien noted: Often, when I look at your daily list, the time that

has elapsed since first hearing some of these performances,

shocks me. The excitement that Frank generated in collecting

circles with "Lover Come Back To Me" is still so immediate to me.

Vinnie Falcone did a marvelous jazz chart with just a quintet..

It is quite similar to the treatment the Nat Cole Trio gave the

the tune back in the forties. He didn't sing it too many times,

but it was a huge crowd pleaser. Listening to his first CBS 15

minute show in 1943, you hear a gorgeous ballad treatment

of the Hammerstein-Romberg classic, with a Stordahl arrangement.

Frank came a long way in 35 years and the version done 31 years

ago this evening is just so different a sound and just as memorable.

note: After subbing for Sammy on 2/1,

Sinatra opened the next night for a seven

day run. He did two shows a night on both

Friday and Saturday. Sunday he came down

with a bug and cancelled for two days. Tuesday

and Wednesday ( 6 & 7 ), he again did two shows

a night to conclude the engagement. There were

nine shows in all. The bug was quite persistent

and Frank was forced to cancel his appearance

at Harrah's, in Lake Tahoe, from 2-24 thru 2-28.

Ed O'Brien:

Frank subbed for Sammy Davis on 2/1 and then opened on 2/2. He did one show that night,

two shows on Friday and Saturday ( 3-4), cancelled Sunday and Monday, due to illness( 5-6),

finished the week by doing two shows a night on Tuesday and Wednesday( 7-8).

Next engagement was scheduled for Harrah's in Lake Tahoe, 2-24-28. Cancelled due to illness.

Frank played a week at Caesars, March 2-8. He was set to do one show a night for the week.

Demand was so great Frank did two shows on both Friday and Saturday ( 3-4)

The Sunrise Theatre in Sunrise, Florida was his next stop. The engagement was set to run from

March 13-19. .Monday was opening night and Frank was in form and Tuesday was another good

show.. But he just couldn't shake the bug plaguing him for over a month. The rest of the week

was rescheduled for April 13-16 with two shows on both the 14 and 15( Friday and Saturday).

Ed O'Brien notes:

After "Clowns" a member of the audience requested "I'll Never Smile Again."

Sinatra complied with great enthusiasm. Bill Miller was the sole backing and Frank did a

very nice vocal. Now, through the years, many songs were requested and Frank would usually

do the first few lines and that was that. For some inexplicable reason "Lean Baby" was often

requested. Anyway, the only two I can recall hearing that were letter perfect were Lowe's

great hit and "I'm In The Mood For Love." I can fully understand the former. Frank's first

big hit and a song that altered the landscape of pop music back in 1940. The latter is a

mystery. He sang it on Perfectly Frank, but it certainly wasn't a song identified with him in

anyway. Strange.

This was a Gene Kelly special

Broadcast on CBS , Wednesday evening, 2-15-78.

Kelly's guests were Cyd Charisse, Liza Minnelli,

Kathryn Grayson, Janet Leigh, Lucille Ball, Esther

Williams and Frank Sinatra. Gene's leading ladies

and the guy with the sailor suit.

Gene and Frank did a comedy bit and sang a parody of "I

Could Write A Book." Liza subbed for her mother

and Cyd did a terrific dance number with Gene.

He also sang a number of songs including "The Hat

My Father Wore Upon St. Patrick's Day."

Ed O'Brien added even more information last year:

Happened upon a little more information

Show was broadcast on NBC from 9 to 10:pm,

Monday night, 3-13-78. The taping was done in

late December of 77. The show finished #31

in the Nielsen ratings for the week. There were

66 shows on the three networks for the seven day

period.

Here is an excerpt from a wire service review:

The Kelly-Sinatra segment had show-

stopping potential, like the song and dance routine

they did together on the "Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back"

special in 1973; but it was not to be this time..

This spot found neither Kelly or Sinatra in top form.

Maybe it was the material: a parody of "I Could

Write A Book," which lacked both sentiment and

style. At any rate, the audience seemed to

appreciate Sinatra's appearance: he left the stage

to one of the few standing ovations of the night.

I attended that Sunrise Theater concert. Was visiting a former girlfriend who lived in West Palm. She met me at the airport and

we went right to the theatre. Don't remember if it was the first night or the second night. I do remember that we had no problem

getting good seats. He sounded fine. Did not know about the cancellations that followed.

This was part of a six city tour that got underway on June 15 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Frank played to large crowds in coliseums and stadiums. "You And Me," with a Don

Costa chart, was introduced.. The song was much more of a quiet ballad in June of 1978.

It gradually evolved into a declaration of anger and despair. The first recording made in

July of 78 lacked the intensity of the August 79 effort. After Sinatra discovered the

deeper meanings within the song, he told Vinnie that from then on every new song would

be sung on stage for at least six months before any recording was attempted.

Frank Sinatra's voice played the Riverfront Coliseum Saturday night to a sell-out crowd

of 17,400 plus. Whether that speck, which rumor said was dressed in a tuxedo, down

on the arena floor was Sinatra's body is anybody's guess. Riverfront Coliseum just

isn't the place for expressive, personable performers whom we want to see for their

manner and style. Apparently there were some foul-ups in air travel. The orchestra

arrived so late they didn't have time to dress for the concert. And Sinatra had to land

at an alternate airport. He looked plain tired.

the Louvre in Paris. But do not to fret. A simple solution exists. Don't go abroad.

He says that "he knew my Sinatra" by that point in time and to avoid parking hassles, we did not arrive until about 40 minutes

into the scheduled start time, as I knew the Comic would go on first and then an intermission. Maybe that was the one

where some Urban hip-hop dancers (a "Bring in the Noise" type act) was the warm-up, although he can't be sure, because he skipped the warm-up.

Interestingly, he adds, the Rolling Stones had just appeared at the Capital Centre about a week earlier:

it was amazing, as we chatted in the crowd, how many people had attended BOTH concerts!

NOTE: Ed O'Brien points out that this is a lost session conducted by Vinnie Falcone. Falcone told O'Brien that Sinatra was testing him. Sinatra wanted to see if Vinnie could handle the pressure. Nelson Riddle's son Chris played bass trombone on the session. After it was over, he came up to Vinnie and told him everyone in the band felt for him and not to worry because he did a good job. Vinnie told O'Brien that Sinatra did a fine job.

Jim White calls attention to the 2005 book by Vinnie Falcone and Bob Popyk entitled FRANKLY JUST BETWEEN US: MY LIFE CONDUCTING FRANK SINATRA'S MUSIC in which the authors expand, most interestingly, on Vinnie's experiences with Frank Sinatra, the man and his music. It is published by the Hal-Leonard Corporation with the ISBN 0-634-09498- X

After posting the Reprise work sheet to the list, I noticed in the upper

right hand corner a printed comment that reminded me of the session sheet of 3-12-75.

Same commentary indicating that no recordings had been done. Could it be that Frank

never recorded "Remember ?" I contacted Lee Hershberg and he agreed with my assumption.

Years ago musicians on the session told me the date was not for recording per se. Essentially,

Frank was testing Vinnie Falcone's ability to conduct in a recording studio. I asked Vinnie and he

thought the recordings had been done. But the session sheet tells a different story.

When the "Suitcase" was being put together in 1995, the producer contacted me

and asked if I would help them find the Elton John-Bernie Taupin song. I called Don Costa's

brother and uncle. They directed me to Don's ex-wife, who was living on a farm in Vermont.

She told me Don had given her all of his tapes, discs, arrangements, etc. She had them stored

in her barn. Promised to do a complete search for me. She found nothing. There was nothing

at Reprise or Sinatra Enterprises. I have hundreds of recordings sheets and simply missed what

is now very obvious: the song was not recorded. There are line recordings from concerts that

year, so, all is not lost.

Ed O'Brien:

This short engagement, running from Monday to Wednesday, was a

last minute addition to Sinatra's schedule. The set list of songs varied

some during the three nights and six shows. Tony Bennett was playing

the South Shore Room at Harrah's ( main room ). He joined Frank for a

duet on closing night ( 26 ). I understand the song was "My Kind Of Town."

Sinatra Gig May Affect Bookings

LOS ANGELES -MCA's booking of Frank Sinatra into its 5,300 seat outdoor Universal Amphitheatre is being observed by talent

managers and booking agents as a good omen for more bookings of

veteran, non -rock performers.

With a few exceptions, this market's summertime fare is dominated

by the contemporary rock and soul

attractions with an occasional Perry

Como making an appearance at the

Greek Theatre across town.

In fact the Amphitheatre, in its

battles to become the leading outdoor summer venue, has emphasized

contemporary youthful acts and has

eschewed the MOR, older performers, so Sinatra is a crack in this wall.

Tradesters hope the booking may

lead to other Las Vegas type acts

who have no home in L.A. finding

their place under the stars.

Sinatra and his opening act, Sarah

Vaughan, pulled in people who never go to the Universal City located Amphitheatre.

Sinatra's magnetism in his show

business hometown resulted in all 10

of his shows selling out, with opening night Monday (31), attracting

the kind of front row crowd which

generally hangs around the Beverly

Hills Hotel's Polo Lounge more than

it goes up the hill to the Amphitheatre from MCA's Universal

movie studio soundstages where it is more at home.

Among these notables coming out

to pay tribute to their long-time

friend were John Wayne, Gregory

Peck, Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford

from the movie industry plus Ronald Reagan, the former movie star,

former California governor, and tv's

Johnny Carson.

Both Warner Bros. Records and

WEA were equally represented with

Sinatra making reference to a new recording he is working on and offering two works from this projected

LP during his set.

The Amphitheatre engagement

marks his first commercial concert

booking since 1952 when he last

played the Cocoanut Grove. In the

last two decades Sinatra has performed at charity concerts, with his

10 -show stand here part of a current

domestic tour.

In essence, what one sees at a Sinatra concert is a glorification of his

nightclub act, a fun experience for

the entertainer in which he totally

gives of himself with emotion, drama, theatrics and classy showmanship.

Sinatra wisely credits the songwriters and arrangers who provide

him with the wherewithal for his instrument-a voice which one acknowledges will never sound like it

did at its zenith years in the 1960s.

But Sinatra's charisma as a cornpleat entertainer and his connection

to his adult audience as a reminder

of their own lives, produces a solid,

lasting soldering between performer

and audience.

This engagement is no exception.

Sinatra's 75- minute turn was standard repertoire designed to maintain

his link to his audience with only the

two new works plus one left field

tune among the 18 offered.

The two new works were "You

And Me" by Carol Sager and Peter

Allen and "Remember" by Elton

John. The odd tune was "America

The Beautiful," the patriotic tune

which fit in snuggly with all the ever- greens by such masters as Cole

Porter, the Gershwins, Rodgers and

Hart, Harold Arlen, Frank Loesser,

Comden and Green, Leonard Bernstein, Johnny Mercer, Kander and

Ebb. Sinatra remains on safe ground

emphasizing tunes he's been doing

for years from "Funny Valentine"

to "My Kind Of Town."

And the music of these song spinners is made glorious for the supporting 38 -piece orchestra conducted by Bill Miller and the arranging pens of Don Costa, Nelson Riddle and Gordon Jenkins.

Sinatra's embracing new composers has him singing single works by George Harrison ( "Something ")

and Jimmy Webb ( "Didn't We

Girl "). The fact that Sarah Vaughan, in

her 35- minute set, sang "Send In The

Clowns" among her own eight offerings, probably meant that Sinatra

avoided offering his own brilliant

interpretation.

There is much more fire and guts

in Sinatra's voice than in previous seasons. His program includes

plenty of challenging tunes to test

his voice, which can be glidingly soft on the ballads and raspy and testy on the straining, driving tempos.

There is a jauntiness, an assertive

air which Sinatra exudes in his jump

tunes which adds a kick to his act.

He snaps his fingers during "Something" to accent the line "ain't gonna

leave her now. " He sways his shoulders in a sensuous way during "At Long

Last Love." He contorts his face with

intensity on "All Of Me."

The contrast in singing styles between Vaughan the veteran jazz

queen and Sinatra the omnipotent

pop tune interpreter is striking.

Whereas Vaughan extends her lyrics, adding new lines to embrace established ones, like her adding a decisive series of "I feel you /I feel you/

yeah, yeah/ I'm feelin', I'm feelin'

okay" to "Feelings," Sinatra hews to

the creators' own directives. His

strength comes in getting into the

gutsy meaning of a love song, the

frustration of a destroyed soul.

Changing moods are part of the menu. A "saloon medley" offers evergreens "The Gal That Got Away"

and "It Never Entered My Mind." A

film medley allows Sinatra to recall

tunes he's embraced for the big screen. Onstage, Sinatra is a gracious host

for this celebration of the good

things in life. "Maybe This Time"

with its somber optimism was his

best effort in meeting the vocal demands of a high energy tune, followed next by "My Way" which

stretches the boundaries from gentleness to surging dynamic intensity.

Sinatra's music embodies all the

aspirations for the good life, interpreted thusly in the new "You And

Me:" "We wanted it all /passion without pain /sunshine without rainy days."

I want to nip this one in the bud. There never was a single planned for "You and Me/Remember.'

The 7-17-78 session was never mastered. I put up the sheet on our list showing it was not.

I have an interview with Don Costa in which he tells of Frank's refusal to record "Maybe This Time."

Costa was very proud of the arrangement and wanted it preserved with the Sinatra vocal. Vinnie

told me that many people urged Frank to make a recording, But he adamantly refused. He felt that

Tony's could not be equalled or topped. Don't forget the only single record Frank ever had pulled, after a

release, was "I Left My Heart in S.F." Vinnie told me the man was in awe of Mr. Bennett's singing.

Audio issues threaten Frank Sinatra State Fair concert in 1978

"The substance of this year's fair is exceptional," said New York State Fair director Thomas Young a few days before the 1978 extravaganza began.

While State Fair directors have annually made such a boast, the Fair in 1978 was stacked with top-notch entertainment.

Demolition derbies would be held twice, there would be a rodeo, stock car races, the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show and a tractor-pulling competition, considered in 1978 to be America's fastest growing motorsport.

Concerts included Pat Boone with his daughter Debby, the Osmonds, Seals & Croft and Kenny Rogers, Dottie West and the Oak Ridge Boys.

But the biggest attraction was "Old Blue Eyes" himself, Frank Sinatra.

Making what was believed to be his first appearance ever at a state fair, Sinatra's appearance on the grandstand stage on Aug. 27, 1978 "soothed the crowd" and saved Fair officials some major embarrassment.

Sinatra was paid $90,000 for his 75-minute performance but Young was quick to say that the State Fair would easily make the money back.

Most of the tickets, which cost between $6-$12, sold out quickly.

For Sinatra, then 62 years old, it would be his second-ever appearance in Syracuse. He had performed at the Onondaga County War Memorial in October 1976.

The evening began disastrously.

The crowd of more than 14,000 people could not hear the opening acts.

Nearly no one in the arriving crowd could understand anything sung by Marlene Ricci and comedian Jackie Gayle's performance was interrupted continuously by the increasingly angered crowd.

"We can't hear!" parts of the grandstand chanted during the opening acts.

"I feel like I'm doing a one-nighter in Helen Keller's house," Gayle ad-libbed at one point.

During a 20-minute intermission before Sinatra took the stage, Post-Standard reviewer Bill Steinberg said, "tensions mounted."

Angry music fans stormed out, looking to demanding a refund, only to find that the ticket offices had already closed.

As sound technicians worked feverishly on the sound system, State Police were seen huddling, discussing what they should do should things turn ugly.

"Their concern evaporated," Steinberg wrote, as soon as "Francis Albert Sinatra strolled through the orchestra to the front of the stage" and began singing "Night and Day."

To the relief of Fair officials and police, Sinatra's "still-magnificent voice" carried to all parts of the grandstand.

"His face appeared ruddy and his hairline receded," Steinberg wrote in his review, "but he still has The Voice, and that is what the people came to hear."

He performed 20 songs, accompanied by a 40-piece backup orchestra, including Syracuse-native Vincent Falcone on piano, including covers of songs from artists spanning the generations from Cole Porter to Elton John.

The audience, described as mainly middle-aged, particularly favored "Chicago (It's My Kind of Town)," "Everybody Loves a Winner," and "My Way," which had the one audience member screaming, "We love you Frankie," when it was over.

He left the stage to a standing ovation after performing "America the Beautiful."

The audio issues from early in the evening were mostly forgotten. They were blamed on a stiff breeze and the "unexpected absorbency" of the audience.
